Diabetes and Periodontal Disease |
Periodontal disease is considered a complication of diabetes, along with heart disease and problems with vision. People with diabetes may be up to four times more likely to develop periodontal disease. Because diabetics are more susceptible to contracting infections are probably more likely to react to the infection caused by bacterial plaque that accumulates between the teeth and under the gums. Uncontrolled diabetics are especially at risk: they are more likely to develop periodontal disease than people who keep their diabetes well-controlled. Research also suggests that periodontal disease may make it more difficult for people who have diabetes to control their blood sugar.
There is a two way relationship between diabetes and periodontal disease. Periodontal health could be a key factor in helping you achieve diabetic control. At Advanced Periodontal Center, Dr. Ortiz-Ramsey will consult with your physician in regard to your diabetes control to develop a treatment plan designed your individual needs.
