Heart Disease and Periodontal Disease |
Studies have shown that individuals with periodontal disease are almost twice as likely to develop coronary heart disease and 2.6 times more likely to die of cardiovascular disease that those without periodontal disease. According to a report from The American Academy of Neurology in 2000, "people who have gum disease may be at a greater risk for stroke due to an increased tendency to have blockages in the carotid arteries." Bacteria usually found in diseased periodontal pockets have been found in arterial plaque formations associated with stroke in up to 50 percent of the cases in studies.
Oral infections are such a general health risk that cardiologists insist that a patient's periodontal disease be treated before procedures such as artificial heart valve placement. At Advanced Periodontal Center, Dr. Ortiz-Ramsey will consult with your cardiologist in regard to their health concerns to develop a treatment plan for your individual needs.
